LOW
COUNTRY VOICES
:What Coastal Back Roads Folk
Told Me of Ghosts, Sea Captains and Charleston Jazzmen
Written by

From
the prologue:
The people I interviewed offered a dazzling spectrum of the rice planter
aristocracy, people born in slavery, the hurricanes of the 1890s, the
renaissance that began when the wealthy northerners came South and bought up
plantations to be used as hunting preserves, and much more. These friendly folks
bared their souls to me during my front porch visits. I remember them well.
Those gracious people inspired me with their tales. The same fire that burned in
their hearts as they recounted a narrative burns now in mine. When I realized
that bits and pieces of information from other research projects would aid the
reader in understanding a story in this collection, I added
them................................Nancy Rhyne.
The Carolina Low Country is a magical place with
colorful characters and fascinating legends. This collection of memorable
tales culminated from interviews with long-time residents of the Carolina coast
is a means to pass on these legends. They bared their souls with a fire
that burned in their hearts.
This inspiring collection of tales includes the
Jenkins Orphanage band, Letters from Alice Flagg’s grave, the origin of She Crab
Soup as told by Sue Alston, the adventures of Captain Jussely as he traveled the
Atlantic transporting passengers and cargo, and the disappearing Cemetery of
Rockville.
