SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
Sandlapper Publishing is an independent, regional book
publisher specializing in
nonfiction books of history, travel, nature, culture, literature,
cooking, photography and children's books. We have a special interest in trade
and scholarly titles about our region. We do not publish fiction, poetry, family
histories or personal memoirs.
What we are looking for:
Nonfiction books about South Carolina.
We seek to publish inspiring and informative books that include an unusual angle or different approach to providing readers with educational books about South Carolina. The purpose of our books to educate the reader about the state.
We prefer the content cover the entire area of South Carolina rather than concentrating on one particular area. For example: Paddling South Carolina rather than Paddling the Edisto.
We will consider works previously published.
We strive to produce quality books that are promoted individually and marketed throughout the region.
Before you submit material:
Research the market to find out if your book is needed. Check with bookstores and libraries to be sure there are no other similar works already available. The work must be well researched and show potential for strong sales. Include with your proposal your findings of this research and your ideas about how to market the book you are proposing.
How to submit:
We encourage writers to query us by mail before submitting manuscripts.
A query should introduce a book proposal and include a synopsis or outline
of the work. The synopsis should include the main topics and viewpoints of
the manuscript. If available include a table of contents. A query should
also include the projects intended audience, the author’s writing and
professional background, and any promotional ideas or suggestions the author
may have. If the project is merely in the “idea stage”, please enclose other
writing samples so that we can get a sense of your writing style, or of your
artwork if available.
If we find your query of interest we will request the entire manuscript. Manuscripts should be typed and as free as possible of grammatical errors.
Do not submit original material (art or manuscript). We accept no responsibility for original and only copies of material.
Include a SASE for a reply to your proposal. Materials unaccompanied by a SASE will not be returned.
Do not fax a query or manuscript.
If the proposal is accepted:
We will provide a contract
which details our publishing process and includes our agreement to pay royalties
of 15% of net receipts. Sandlapper Publishing will be responsible for sales,
publicity and distribution. We do not require payment from the author for
publishing expenses, however, we do require that an author participate in our
extensive marketing efforts. Authors must be available for book signings, radio
and television interviews and public appearances in South Carolina.
