Photographs by Eugene B. Sloan
A collection of stories that bring into focus the families and old historic
houses in Beaufort and the South Carolina barrier islands. The stories are
a way of life that is no more. Traditions of the sea island natives and
the planter families in their elegant mansions portray the area's amazing way of
life.
The book includes many photographs from the
1960s (when the book was first published) and some from the days of the
Confederate War. The stories relate much about the history and folklore of
the area, as handed down by the families who lived in and around Beaufort.
Rumors of buried treasure, past lives of aristocrats and recountings of the
Revolutionary War and Civil War are included. Also includes a famous crab soup
recipe and an interesting story of an albino dolphin once seen in Beaufort
waters.
Illustrated with more than 80 black and white,
historic photographs & prints.
156 pages. 1997 (1963).
